Up in her room, Frankie grabbed her iPad from her dressing table and clicked on the link Katie had sent her. As the portal opened, she could see that there were four cameras on the house: at the main gate, the front door, the side passage covering the double garage, and one that took in the back garden, patio and swimming pool.

Sitting on her bed, Frankie found Friday’s recordings and clicked through them all, looking to see how much of the grounds each camera covered.

The camera that was focused on the patio seemed to be positioned at the dining room end and covered the whole area down to the kitchen, where Frankie could see the garden doors had been pushed open. Moving the recording on, she found the start of the party and fast forwarded it through to midnight, stopping every now and again to check what was happening. At 12.06, she could see from the reactions of everyone on the patio that the fight had started. The angle meant that the camera didn’t quite cover the whole area, but she could see everyone turning, reacting, and some rushing inside.

Her neck suddenly stiff with tension, Frankie kicked off her trainers and wriggled up the bed, pulling her pillows up behind her and resting the iPad on her knee.

Re-running the video, she watched carefully, trying to work out who was on the patio. Perhaps Rob Doyle had been out there and not been caught in anyone’s selfies.

But the lighting was terrible, only the candles and the LEDs giving any definition to the dark shapes that formed the crowd, the occasional glow of a cigarette punctuating the darkness. Katie had obviously switched off the security lights in the garden. The only one that was working was a fairly weak one over the kitchen doors.

Frankie sighed. So much for that brilliant idea. It was hopeless.

Sitting back, she rubbed her nose. She’d thought this would be the answer to everything, helping them pinpoint who had been outside during the evening. She rewound the video to 11.57 and hit Play again, scanning the screen, this time looking around the edges of the frame. At 12.03, at the far end of the patio, the kitchen light came on.

This time Frankie watched that corner of the screen carefully as the dark figures of two girls almost fell out of the kitchen doors. She rolled the video back to check again.

Laughing uncontrollably, half obscured by the open glazed door, they dived into the bushes in the flowerbed on the far side of the garden. Frankie strained her eyes to see the details. Even though their faces were turned away from the camera, Caitriona’s wild red curls and Maeve’s platinum-blonde bob were unmistakable. What on earth were they up to?
